Description

This animation focusses all the attention on the amazing prominences during the Total Solar Eclipse.
  • I tried to capture the brightness, color and drama of the prominences, and bring out all the detail there as well.

My previous posted animation, focussed on the amazing Solar Corona in HDR.
  • There I tried to bring out the best of the corona, while maintaining as much as I could of the prominences.
  • However, the dynamic range difference meant that the prominences were washed out.
  • Also HDR requires lots of different exposures, which means time passes, and the moon moves, which makes alignment and retention of the fine detail difficult.

I have yet to see a Total Solar Eclipse image or animation that shows both the Corona and the Prominences in their full glory, even close to the visual experience.
  • An image that focuses on one, diminishes the other. Our eye is cleverly adaptive and can synthesize the full story in our brain.
  • So, I confess, I cannot capture it as the eye sees either, HDR or another way.
  • But at the same time I have not found an image from anyone that manages this feat either.

So admitting to failure to both in the same image, here is an animation that I hope captures the glory and detail in the amazing prominences, at the expense of the Corona.

Processing

  • This animation is comprised of 9 images at 0.5 ms exposure over the 3 minute Total Solar Eclipse as I captured it, excepting that I missed capturing Bailey's Beads coming into totality.
  • The 9 images were tweened in Photoshop, with three intervening frames, for a total of 33 frames. Thus each frame represents about 6 seconds in real time.
  • The final gif animation is saved at 50% resolution to make it more managable on AB.
  • Full details of my processing are  very similar to those for my Corona focussed animation, aside from the not doing the HDR and coronal processing. All the details I shared here,.

Please zoom into the full posted resolution to see the fine details.
